More on banking
Let this be a warning to anyone that returns to a different part
of the US from overseas. After a week's worth of attempts to
transfer money from Karen and Rich's bank in Maryland to
their new bank in Georgia (under normal conditions, a check
could have been written, but new accounts in GA seem to
have different rules; if we had known this, we could have
started a new bank account before we arrived here), Rich
trekked to Maryland on Wednesday to get money. He was
easily able to obtain a cashier's check from the bank in MD;
there's just no substitute for in-person banking sometimes.
Rich then found some fine print in the banking agreement from
the Georgia bank that suggested this check would also take too
long to clear (even though a cashier's check is supposed to be
as good as cash). Fortunately, a call to the mortgaage broker
associated with the Georgia bank, who worked on the mortgage
for our house, and was well aware that we had this money
available, seems to have solved the problem, at least for now.
We shall see today if his solution works for us.
